UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Global, in partnership with the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, as well as EPPIC, will host a Global Learning Faculty Fellows Workshop for the first time in June. The two-and-a-half-day, retreat-style workshop will provide faculty with intimate access to experts in global learning pedagogies in a collaborative and supportive atmosphere.

Penn State Global and the Schreyer Institute will bring to campus expertise from outside institutions and leading organizations in the field who have experience integrating global learning into residentially taught classes and assessing learning outcomes. The residential workshop is open to full time, Penn State faculty from any campus.

“Penn State’s mission is to graduate globally competent, future leaders, and we must think about how we accomplish this with the knowledge that only about a quarter of our students will ever have the opportunity to study abroad,” said Brian Brubaker, assistant vice provost for Global Learning in Penn State Global. “Ensuring that our faculty have the tools and support necessary to amplify global learning in our residential classrooms across the commonwealth is essential. This workshop will bring expertise and resources to our faculty and will play a leading role in assisting Penn State with achieving its global learning objectives.”

The workshop will take place at The Nature Inn at Bald Eagle State Forest, a scenic venue located just 20 miles from University Park. Fifteen participants will engage in small-group discussions, readings, workshop activities, and critical dialogue around global learning in the classroom. The learning retreat will take place from Sunday afternoon, June 4, though Tuesday evening, June 6. During down time, participants will be encouraged to reflect on their work in this space and talk through challenges with each other.

"The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence — Penn State's university-wide teaching center — was eager to partner with Penn State Global on key elements of the University's strategic plan such as transforming education and supporting global learning," said Angela Linse, associate dean and executive director of the Schreyer Institute. "The Institute's faculty teaching consultants bring to this collaboration a wealth of expertise in global learning frameworks and intercultural learning, as well as curriculum design and assessment."

The program will enable Penn State instructors to develop courses that ask students to apply global perspectives and take actions that demonstrate intercultural competence. All accommodations, meals, lodging and mileage to/from the Nature Inn are included in the retreat.

Interested faculty are asked to complete this online application for the workshop by March 3. Participants will be selected and notified by April 1. Participants are able to engage in the workshop free of charge. While Penn State Global and the Schreyer Institute for Teaching and Learning will subsidize the workshop, a nominal contribution fee from the participant’s department or college is required.
