YORK, Pa. — Artificial intelligence (AI) has been in the news headlines lately, from AI-generated art to the fear of potential extinction, these emerging technologies seem to touch nearly every facet of the human experience. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Penn State York has selected this topic for its upcoming virtual presentation, “Artificial Intelligence (AI): A Human-Centered and Socially Responsible Approach,” set for Aug. 29 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., via Zoom.
Speaker S. Shyam Sundar is the James P. Jimirro Professor of Media Effects in the Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State, and founder and current co-director of the Media Effects Research Laboratory. He also serves as director of the University-wide Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence.
Some of the major questions about AI to be discussed include:
- How will AI impact daily life?
- Should this technology be regulated?
- What are the implications of unregulated AI?
“Artificial Intelligence (AI) influences so many facets of our lives, it seems that we can’t go a day without hearing about it in the news. As a lifelong learning institute, I think that it is important to provide basic information about AI in a setting where the information is tailored to those 50 or better and where they can ask questions pertinent to their lives,” said Jen Geubtner-May, director of York’s OLLI program.
