Penn State World Campus affinity groups to help connect students

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s online learners who are parents will have a new way to connect with one another through a group being organized by Penn State World Campus.

The group is the first of several planned affinity groups that will be offered virtually and led by Penn State World Campus Student Affairs staff. These groups are different from the more than one dozen student clubs and organizations, which are led by students.

Affinity groups

Affinity groups are the latest way that World Campus seeks to foster a sense of belonging among students, by creating spaces for them to engage with one another and participate in the Penn State community. The groups will offer a safe space to share an identity, share experiences, build connections and learn from each other.

These groups will serve as informal spaces for those who identify with each group’s description. The affinity groups are open to the more than 19,000 Penn State World Campus students, many of whom expressed interest in joining Student Affairs staff in developing this new way for students to connect.

“World Campus Student Affairs is thrilled to offer students new ways to intentionally connect, engage, and build their network,” said Elli Bezotte, Penn State World Campus student engagement coordinator. “Affinity groups are an important tool for enhancing student success and belonging. These groups provide a safe space for students to celebrate, connect, and share resources. The mutual support and community created within affinity groups is a valuable asset in navigating personal and professional goals.”

Parenting students affinity group

The parenting students’ affinity group will launch after the Parenting Students Social Gathering being held from 6 to 7 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, July 25. Students must register through the Penn State World Campus Student Center.

The event is a space for students to interact with each other to share the unique challenges and joys of being a student and a parent. They will have the opportunity to discuss their experiences, share parenting tips, and find solidarity among peers. The event will include a small group discussion on balancing studies and parenting and how to manage stress. Students will also be invited to share their best parenting hacks and resources during a group session.

Additional groups to come

In addition to the parenting students' group, World Campus plans to add and expand affinity groups this fall, including for students of color, LGBTQ+ students, and first-generation students. Groups are open to all students, including allies.
