DALLAS, Pa. — High school students interested in science, technology, engineering, the arts or mathematics (STEAM) are invited to a day of hands-on STEAM activities at Penn State Wilkes-Barre at no cost.

“Exploring STEAM Careers” will be held at the campus on Nov. 6. Check-in is from 8 to 8:30 a.m. and the event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sessions will be held in the areas of chemistry, engineering, information technology, mathematics and surveying engineering.

“This has been a popular event the previous two years we offered it, and we are seeing demand for STEAM careers continue to increase,” said Alex Ellsworth, interim director of enrollment management. “It’s a good way to expose students to growing career fields and have them learn about the practical applications of the fields of study they are interested in. They will get to participate in hands-on activities as part of the learning process.”

Students attending will be able to hear from Penn State Wilkes-Barre students during a panel presentation about their programs, areas of interest and personal experiences. Attendees will also work closely with campus faculty, who will be leading the sessions.

Lunch and a special STEAM T-shirt will be provided to all attendees. Those who plan to attend are asked to pre-register online and also secure their school’s approval to attend.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre partners with local schools to promote and advance education in STEAM fields. In addition to Exploring STEAM Careers, the campus has offered mini STEAM activity days with individual high schools and also offers dual enrollment courses.

“We want to highlight the fields that are growing and that we have the resources to help students interested in those fields,” Ellsworth said.
