UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) is accepting applications through April 19 for the 2024-25 Faculty Engagement Awards. This year’s theme is “Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Teaching.”

Recipients of Faculty Engagement Awards will focus on readily available generative AI tools including Microsoft CoPilot and Adobe Firefly. Access to these tools will focus on such abilities of using generative AI to assist in content creation, course planning and content delivery. In addition, generative AI will be used to enhance overall faculty productivity in teaching and administrative tasks including managing and facilitating efficient communication.

“We’re thrilled to partner with faculty to delve into the realm of generative AI and its potential applications in teaching and faculty productivity,” said Amy Kuntz, an instructional designer with TLT. “By embracing these technologies for experimentation and discovery within faculty’s own purview, the goal is to ultimately free up more time for faculty to focus on what they do best: inspiring and guiding students.”

TLT’s Faculty Engagement Awards are allocated annually around a theme that combines sound pedagogy and digital tools. This year’s focus, “Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Teaching,” intends to leverage generative AI tools for teaching across three categories: text, imagery and video.

These tools encompass a range of features designed for faculty to enhance the teaching and learning experience in creative ways, including revolutionizing content creation, implementing personalized feedback mechanisms and transforming text-based communications.

During their project, award recipients will collaborate with instructional designers to identify possible uses and constraints and best practices for using generative AI for teaching purposes. Additionally, TLT staff will help to assess the technology’s impact and share relevant findings with the Penn State community.

Award recipients will be notified in early May.
