UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State University Libraries continues its Library Discovery Hour programming with fall events in October and November, featuring “dangerous books” and prioritizing open access for Penn State University Press and student well-being in library spaces. All events are open to the public; when space is limited, registration will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Friday, Oct. 13, hybrid, noon to 1 p.m.: “Dangerous Books: Smoke, Mold and Poison” — As the October event’s seasonally spooky title notes and Friday the 13th date reinforces, hosts will present attendees with haunting tales of mystery that only occur in a library. There will be smoke, there will be tiny creatures, along with poison potions to thrill one and all. Hosted by the University Libraries’ Conservation Centre, presenters invite attendees to see how the University Libraries deals with all of these and more ... if you dare. Limited space is available at the Conservation Centre for in-person attendance, and a waiting list has been created. The Oct. 13 event registration link includes options for Zoom-only attendance as well as the waiting list for in-person attendance.

Thursday, Nov. 9, virtual, noon to 1 p.m.: “GivingTuesday: Students First”  — Learn more about the global event called GivingTuesday, Penn State’s participation, and how you can help the University Libraries be No. 1! On Nov. 28, the Libraries will join more than 100 Penn State units participating in GivingTuesday to promote student well-being and open access for Penn State University Press. Presenters Cate Fricke of Penn State University Press and Megan Gilpin and Brett Spencer of the University Libraries will provide an inside look at both priorities and share how the University Libraries is putting students first. Zoom registration for the Nov. 9 event is available online.

Library Discovery Hour events give attendees an inside look at today’s Penn State University Libraries and access to the perspectives of experts and students, while they learn more about the University Libraries’ primary priorities: Community, Collections and the Commons. The series also showcases how philanthropy has a positive impact and connects University Libraries donors with other passionate Penn Staters.
