UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Joseph T. Yun, artificial intelligence (AI) and innovation architect for the University of Pittsburgh, will lead sessions on AI in teaching and learning over two days in April as part of Penn State Teaching and Learning with Technology's (TLT) Dreamery Speaker Series.
Yun will present “Let’s Get Real with Artificial Intelligence” from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on April 16 at the Dreamery, ground floor Shields Building, on Penn State‘s University Park campus. Yun will concisely outline the transition from conventional AI approaches to the innovative realm of generative AI and explore the significant impact this evolution has had — and is expected to continue having — on both academic environments and societal operations at large. He will also delve into the necessity of integrating AI into our everyday lives, emphasizing the importance for students to expand their understanding and application of AI technology.
Attendees are invited to participate in a networking session afterward.
From 10:30 a.m. to noon April 17 at the Dreamery, Yun will lead a faculty workshop on “How Do We Realistically Move Forward in This New Age of AI?” This workshop will kick off with an overview of generative AI basics, tailored for those who missed TLT’s last faculty session. Participants will then delve into an engaging inquiry: “What does the future of higher education entail?” The gathering will serve as an interactive brainstorming forum leveraging fresh insights on AI to formulate precise, context-driven questions about the future of higher education, reflecting the diverse disciplines and experiences of participants.
Yun is the artificial intelligence and innovation architect for the University of Pittsburgh and a research professor of electrical and computer engineering in its Swanson School of Engineering. Yun’s research is primarily focused on novel AI/ML algorithms/technologies, user-centric analytics systems, computational advertising, novel technologies such as blockchain and societal considerations of AI-based advertising and marketing (e.g., privacy, ethics). One specific focus area of Yun's current research is in the realm of misinformation and disinformation and the technologies that support its distribution. Yun is the principal investigator of the Social Media Macroscope, an open research environment for social media analytics. He is also an affiliate of Pitt Cyber and the Collaboratory Against Hate.
In-person attendance at the Dreamery on the lower level of the Shields Building is encouraged. Alternatively, a virtual option will be available for Penn State attendees across all campuses and those working or studying remotely.
