UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. —  Submissions are now open for participants in “2025 Love Data Week” events and to compete in the annual Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) Data Visualization Championship. Events will occur from Monday, Feb. 10, through Friday, Feb. 14. More information on the schedule will be shared in January. This year’s activities will also take place in conjunction with the Penn State Data Summit, which will be held on Feb. 12 and 13.

2025 BTAA Data Visualization Championship

This year the championship is co-sponsored by Penn State's Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research and the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research, with monetary awards for the top two candidates in both student and faculty/staff categories.

  • First place - $300
  • Second place - $200

Submissions for the competition are due by Jan. 17. Participants must use the Data Visualization Championship form to submit their work.

Visualizations that win 1st place will be submitted to BTAA, and members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance community will be invited to vote for the winner among all institutions.

Students: Students are challenged to devise a data visualization using the U.S. National Park Visit Data (1979-2023) — Responsible Datasets in Context to address questions of the student's choice. Students may supplement their visualization with additional publicly available data if they wish.

Faculty/Staff: Submissions should focus on the theme of the Big Ten (i.e., athletics, enrollment data, etc.). Participants can also submit an existing visualization pertaining to the institution as a whole or a specific initiative or population. It can also highlight the projects that participants are working on. Submissions should adhere to institutional data policies.
