Effective learning resources

College courses can often present new challenges and require new learning strategies. The earlier in the semester students upgrade their learning strategies, the more likely they are to meet or exceed expectations and find success in a course.

Penn State Learning’s “Effective Learning” page has several resources to help students find success in their studies and academic pursuits:

  • Exam preparation
  • Office hours guidance
  • Use of webcams
  • Virtual study groups
  • Course modes
  • Academic advising
  • Library resources
  • Learning technology tools
  • Disability services

A two-hour transition-to-college “Study Smarter Metacognitive Strategies” workshop will be offered throughout the fall semester. The remote workshop introduces college-level learning and will be led by peer tutors who have successfully navigated the transition to college. Find the links to register and attend on the Penn State Learning website.

Guided Study Groups

Students can drop in for Guided Study Groups (GSG) where peer tutors review materials from a wide range of courses and help students hone their problem-solving skills in a stimulating, supportive and collaborative learning environment.

Group leaders attend class and work with course instructors to provide review materials that help students prepare for quizzes and exams. Find more information at the Penn State Learning Guided Study Groups page

Over 14,000 students accessed services and resources from Penn State Learning in 2023-24, and the number of contacts with these students exceeded 100,000. It is part of Penn State Undergraduate Education, the academic administrative unit that provides leadership and coordination for University-wide programs in support of undergraduate teaching and learning at Penn State.
