University Park, P.A. – "True Likeness," an exhibition of contemporary portraits from diverse makers in a variety of media, is on view in HUB Gallery and Art Alley until March 20. The HUB Gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the HUB-Robeson Center is open 24/7.
Several classes have visited "True Likeness" to add an out-of-classroom experience that builds on the themes of identity, bias, material and portraiture.
Students from Teresa Hamilton’s Rhetoric and Civic Life class were inspired to center their deliberations on identity and bias after viewing "True Likeness." One student shared, “I was fortunate enough to see 'True Likeness' with my peers and have thought-provoking discussions with them. All of it helped me reevaluate my definition of art, identity and self-expression, and I am grateful that I was trusted to view such personal pieces.”
"Wouldn’t it be beautiful if, like the artists behind True Likeness, we all let our image be the most powerful and authentic version possible?" another student shared. "Maybe then, it will not be so intimidating to be on display each day.”
Megan Gottfried's ART20 class also visited the exhibition to draw from the artworks in "True Likeness," spending focused time with the works for inspiration and practice.
"True Likeness" closes March 20. Students, faculty, staff and community members can visit the exhibition to experience how these portraits serve as expressions of identity, popular taste, social standing, and as documents of who, when and where.
This exhibition was curated by Lia Newman and Tom Stanley. Special thanks to project contributors Russ White, Graham McKinney, Stephanie Cash, Kayley McDonald, Grace Southern, Dani Spewak, Sarah Kipp and Kelly Kutz.
