UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State's HUB-Robeson Galleries will present an interactive collaborative sculpture, "Origins of Sound and Sculpture," from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, April 19, with Brazilian artist Juliana Cerqueira Leite and French-Brazilian bass player Gui Duvignau.
Leite and Duvignau will perform as "Origins of Sound and Sculpture," in which they consider intersections between drawing, shapes and musical notation as a way to collaborate with the public. The performance will encourage guests to use donated materials such as clean cardboard tubes, large packaging volumes like Styrofoam shapes, fabric, plastic and other containers to create a single work of art.
The goal of the performance is to form a creative feedback loop between the musicians and sculptors. The musicians' creation will inspire the sculptors to think differently about what they make. As the sculpture appears, the musicians will use it as a notation for improvising. In the end, a large, collectively built sculpture will be celebrated for one night only and then recycled as part of the fleeting quality of improvisational music. The performance is open to the public.
Leite also has upcoming art to be viewed at the HUB Gallery beginning April 25.
