UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State will operate on a limited schedule throughout the winter break period but will still offer resources to students who may require assistance with housing, food, and other basic needs. University offices and operations, except for essential services, will close Dec. 17 and reopen for normal hours of operation beginning Jan. 3, 2022.
Food resources
On-campus dining halls will remain open during limited hours. All dining halls will close Dec. 19 and will at least partially reopen on the following dates, respectively:
- East Food District — Jan. 8
- Pollock Dining Commons — Jan. 6
- South Food District — Jan. 8
- West Food District — Jan. 8
- North Food District — Jan. 8
Normal spring hours will begin Jan. 9 for East, Pollock, South and West dining halls. North’s normal spring hours will begin Jan. 10.
For students who will be remaining on-campus over the break, residence halls will be stocked with light meal and snack options in the kitchen areas.
For students who may need additional assistance with securing food, toiletries or some household items during the break, the Lion’s Pantry will operate with limited hours.
The Lion’s Pantry will be open during the following days/times (weather permitting). Check the Pantry’s social media — including its Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages for possible weather closures and added hours.
- Dec. 19: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.
- Dec. 20: 4 to 6 p.m.
- Dec. 21: 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
- Dec. 22: 4 to 6 p.m.
- Jan. 3: 10 a.m. to noon
- Jan. 6: 10 a.m. to noon
The State College Food Bank will be open during its normal hours of operation. To receive assistance, visit the bank’s website to determine eligibility.

Housing options
Residence halls will close at 4 p.m. on Dec. 18. However, certain buildings remain open over the break and Housing Operations will maintain services in those buildings. Students who anticipate a need for housing assistance over the break should reach out to the Housing Assignment Office to discuss what space is available. Isolation/quarantine housing also will remain operational throughout the break period to support students who are not able to travel home.
Students who have an immediate need for housing assistance arise during the break may visit the University’s Housing Support page to find resources.
Financial support
Students who anticipate a need over winter break can reach out prior to the break to request assistance.
- For one-time emergency assistance, Student Care and Advocacy offers financial support through its Student Emergency Fund. Students from any campus may apply for a grant, which typically does not exceed $500, from the fund at any time.
- Student Affairs’ Guide to Public Assistance Programs gives information for resources and eligibility in the State College area and beyond. Staff are available to assist students in understanding their options and navigating applications.
Please note these offices will be closed from Dec. 18 to Jan. 2 and cannot process applications during that time.
Additional resources
If a student needs care when University Health Services (UHS) is closed, Dec. 18 through Jan. 2, they may call the Nurse Advice Line at 814-863-4463. A nurse is available 24/7. In an emergency, students are advised to visit an urgent care center or the Emergency Department at Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Students who need mental health support or assistance over the break can contact the 24/7 crisis line for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). The Penn State Crisis Line is available around the clock at 877-229-6400 or by texting “LIONS” to 74141.
UHS and CAPS will resume regular operating hours on Jan. 3.
