UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Campus Recreation invites students to partake in its free programming for NIRSA Rec Day on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

NIRSA, the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association, commemorates its founding every year on Feb. 22 with a celebration of campus recreation. As a member of NIRSA, Penn State Campus Recreation will host a variety of events throughout the day to celebrate health, activity, competition and inclusivity.

“The goal of this day for Penn State is to continue to bring awareness to and promote Campus Recreation facilities, programs and services, as well as celebrate collegiate recreation globally,” said Laura Gilham, assistant director of Campus Recreation.

The schedule for Penn State’s NIRSA Rec Day celebration is as follows:

  • Pickleball in the Intramural (IM) Building from 2 to 4 p.m. on Court 4 — Staff will be present to help students learn to play and coordinate individual games. Participants will receive a NIRSA Rec Day t-shirt while supplies last.
  • Tabling in the IM Building lobby from 4 to 8 p.m. — Representatives will be present to promote Campus Recreation and NIRSA Rec Day. Those who stop by the table will have a chance to pick up a giveaway item.
  • 3-Point Shootout and Hot Shot Contest from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in IM Building Gym 4, Court 2 — Students can participate in one or both of these basketball competitions. The highest score of each session will receive a NIRSA Rec Day t-shirt. Students can register on IMLeagues, but it is not required. Up to 10 participants will be permitted every half hour.
  • Cardio Dance Party from 7:15 to 8 p.m. in the IM Building Gym 2 — This is a cardio-based dance class filled with fun choreography. All ability levels are welcome. Registration through the Campus Recreation website is required. Participants will receive a NIRSA Rec Day t-shirt while supplies last.

“We encourage students to participate in the various NIRSA Rec Day programs throughout the day as avenues for fun, physical fitness and overall well-being,” Gilham said.
