UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa – Campus Recreation, a unit of Student Affairs, is opening of 12 brand-new outdoor pickleball courts located next to the McCoy Natatorium at the former tennis court site. These courts were made possible by the Student Fee Board and constructed by John Nastease Construction to meet the growing demand for pickleball among students.

As one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, pickleball has quickly gained traction within the Penn State community. Recognizing the demand, Campus Recreation has converted the former tennis court into a dynamic space dedicated to this popular sport, ensuring students have access to quality facilities. This change underscores Campus Recreation’s commitment to enhancing student life by offering diverse recreational opportunities.

"We want to extend our gratitude to the Student Fee Board for funding this project,” said Stephen Kampf, Campus Recreation senior director. “It’s an activity that many Penn State students have been eagerly requesting.”

The new courts are open to all Penn State students, or those with a Campus Recreation membership, from sunup to sundown. Those needing equipment can check out pickleball paddles and balls from the Intramural Building and Tennis Center on campus. Additionally, the courts are easily accessible through the Blue Loop via CATA Bus, which stops directly in front of the facility, with paid parking available in the stadium lots.

The grand opening event is today (Sept. 9) from 2 to 4 p.m. and will feature various giveaways, music and an opportunity to try out the new courts for newcomers or experienced players. Students and Campus Recreation members are encouraged to attend and experience the new courts firsthand.
