UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Nate Allred, a Penn State Smeal College of Business marketing doctoral student, won "Best Presenter" recently at the Albert Haring Symposium for Doctoral Research in Marketing.
The symposium, hosted by the Indiana Kelley School of Business, drew representatives from 14 different schools from across the country. New York University and Southern Cal were joined by 12 Big Ten universities, all but Maryland and Rutgers.
Allred presented on a paper titled “Replace or Repair?: How Companies Can Signal Unused Utility and Decrease Product Replacement.” Karen Winterich, Gerald I. Susman Professor in Sustainability, co-authored the paper with Allred.
Sotos Pagiavlas, assistant professor of marketing, served as Smeal’s faculty representative.
This is the second year in a row that a Smeal doctoral student won best presenter at the symposium.
“Penn State's Marketing Department has been fortunate to have talented graduate students who have been recognized at the Haring Symposium as presenters and discussants. This is the second year in a row that a Penn State marketing Ph.D. student has received the best presenter award,” said Meg Meloy, chair of the Department of Marketing and David H. McKinley Professor of Business Administration.
“This year's winner, Nathan Allred, has been working on this particular project for some time and said it is easy to talk about — everyone has their own stories about repairing versus replacing appliances. It's relatable. With the job market around the corner, it's terrific for Nate to receive this kind of recognition.”
