Penn State Smeal Department of Marketing ranked by AMA for research productivity

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Smeal College of Business Department of Marketing and two of its faculty are included in two lists of author research productivity recently published by the American Marketing Association (AMA).

Among the premier marketing journal publications, which include Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing and Marketing Science, for the years 2012-21, Karen Winterich, Gerald I. Susman Professor in Sustainability, was ranked No. 29. The department was ranked No. 15.

For the premier AMA publications (i.e., Journal of Marketing and the Journal of Marketing Research), Winterich was joined by Gary Lilien, distinguished research professor of management science. Both were tied in rank at No. 30. The department was ranked No. 10 in research productivity among these premier AMA journals from 2012-2021.

“We have some of the most talented researchers in the world on the faculty. There is positive energy and great momentum among the group,” said Meg Meloy, David H. McKinley Professor of Business Administration and chair of the Department of Marketing.

“I so appreciate individuals like Karen and Gary who have been pioneers in their respective areas of research," added Meloy. "Their work has shaped the direction of the field. And not only is their research having profound impact, these are individuals who are also giving back to the Marketing Department and Penn State through their service to the students, department, and Penn State initiatives at large. We are blessed.”

Meloy said that the impact of such recognition is felt far beyond individual and departmental acclaim.

“I am always excited for the faculty when their work is published and recognized in the premier journals in marketing,” she said. “It is a wonderful achievement for them, but it also shines a light on the department and the cutting edge thought leadership of the group in the broader marketing community. The insights from their research then flows back to the students. The ripples are profound.”
