UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Chelsea Hammond has accepted an appointment as the assistant director for curricular enhancement with the Tarriff Center for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility at the Penn State Smeal College of Business.

Hammond, an associate clinical professor of marketing, had been associated with the Tarriff Center for several years before joining in an official capacity this semester.

“Dr. Hammond brings a powerful combination of passion, industry experience, and teaching excellence into this new position,” said Michelle Darnell, director of the Tarriff Center. “She’s previously worked to assess how ethics and social responsibility content are integrated into programs offered through the Marketing Department, as well as how assurance of learning by our students is assessed.”

Hammond also has worked to enhance resources within the Marketing Department in this area, thanks to a gift from Tom and Linda Buday to endow the Tom and Linda Buday Purposeful Brands Excellence Fund.

“Now more than ever, we need leaders and contributors who are actively approaching business with integrity and social responsibility,” said Hammond. “I’m excited to support the mission of the Tarriff Center through working with Smeal’s faculty to further advance educating our students about responsible business.”

Having a dedicated role to support curricular enhancement, with the creation of this position, enables Smeal College to objectively define and assess students’ progress toward becoming the next generation of responsible leaders, according to Darnell.

This inaugural position was made possible by the Hughes-Quintos Program Fund, a gift from Smeal alumna Karen Quintos and her husband, Tony. Continued work to guide the integration of opportunities for development of relevant knowledge and skills throughout Smeal College’s program-specific curricula was initiated with the creation of the Linda Trevino Excellence in Business Ethics Program Fund, a gift of Frederik and Sonja Wenzel and named after the distinguished professor of organizational behavior and ethics.

“Our faculty do an amazing job at integrating content related to responsible business into their courses, but Smeal has an opportunity to enhance what is, in some ways, a fragmented approach,” Darnell said.

Hammond said that accepting the new role allows her to satisfy two goals.

“One of the elements of Smeal’s mission is to build and promote integrity, diversity, service and sustainability. We want that for the culture of our college, but we also want our students to take those values with them into the world and execute on them in business. Working with the Tarriff Center is a great opportunity to serve the mission of the college and support student success.”
