DUNMORE, Pa. — Adam Horan, a third-year student at Penn State Scranton, has been honored with the 2024 Chancellor’s Student Worker Service Award. Horan, who is majoring in information technology with a focus on cybersecurity, was recognized for his exceptional contributions and dedication as a student worker in the campus’ IT department.

“I am deeply honored to receive the Chancellor’s Service Award,” Horan said. “It was a delightful moment not only in my academic and professional career but also in my life as a whole. It shows me that with my ability to push forward in life and the sincere dedication and care I put into my work, I can accomplish anything and make people happy along the way.”

Horan has been a work-study student in the IT department for two years, after being hired in September 2022.

“Throughout my entire time here, I have found so much care and kindness from my fellow co-workers. It is without a doubt my greatest enjoyment while working here," he said. "This role has caused me to extend my critical thinking capabilities, my voice, confidence, and much more. With these skills — some grown upon and others completely fresh to me — I find myself to be a more formal, structured and responsible adult.”

In addition to his work-study role, Horan is actively involved in campus life. He serves as the vice president of the IST Club and has taken on the role of student senator for the IT major, advocating for his peers and helping to engage students.

Horan said his journey at Penn State Scranton has been transformative.

“For me, who hadn’t been in a brick-and-mortar environment since third grade, who had absolutely no confidence in myself, and who could barely make a phone call without feeling like a fool — I thought I was doomed,” he said. “Then I transferred here to Penn State Scranton. Despite my hesitation and the fact I was a nervous wreck upon arrival, I was welcomed with open arms. Faculty, staff and fellow students all believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.”

As he reflects on his time at Penn State Scranton, Horan expressed his gratitude to the community.

“Thank you to everyone, from the bottom of my heart,” Horan said. “It really goes to show that anyone, no matter your background or talents, can become an achiever and, most importantly, a believer. This campus can and will thrive with this close, beautiful community forever.”

The Chancellor’s Student Worker Service Award is presented to student employees who have made significant contributions to creating a vibrant and supportive campus community. Horan’s dedication and impact on the Penn State Scranton community exemplify the qualities celebrated by this award.
