DUNMORE, Pa. — Penn State Scranton Chancellor Marwan Wafa has announced that Sarah Smith, mental health therapist and licensed professional counselor, is the campus’ Employee of the Month for June.

Director of Student Services and Engagement Matthew Nied nominated Smith for her impact on the campus’ community.

“Since joining Penn State Scranton in 2023 as our counselor, Sarah Smith has worked diligently to establish relationships with students, staff and faculty. In this short period of time, she has changed the trajectory of CAPS and is poised to continue to grow services and expand on programs,” Nied wrote. “ She has made strong connections with the community at large while supporting our institutional goals. Sarah goes above and beyond to support our students through both the good and challenging times. She continues to develop a strong connection with our students, so they are comfortable when speaking with her.  She works to meet the needs of our students by being available evenings and on weekends. Sarah is well deserving of this recognition.”

Campus Nurse Jill Thoman, echoing Nied's sentiments, emphasized Smith's positive influence on both students and colleagues.

“Sarah has been such a breath of fresh air for our campus,” Thoman said. “She is thoughtful, a pleasure to work with and always has a kind word.  She is certainly a blessing, not only to students, but to her colleagues as well!”

Congratulations, Sarah!

The Employee of the Month recognition was initiated in 2016 by Wafa as a way of distinguishing staff members who “go above and beyond the call of duty” in serving Penn State Scranton. Campus staff, faculty and students are encouraged to nominate staff members for the recognition of going “above and beyond.”
