UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Undergraduate Research and Fellowships Mentoring (URFM), in partnership with University Libraries, will hold four virtual information sessions from Sept. 14-17 to help undergraduate students at Penn State understand the landscapes of research and fellowships.
These four sessions — under the banner of URFM Week — will feature undergraduate student panels. They require registration and will be offered through Zoom.
"Research and You: Unpacking Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry"
3 p.m. Sept. 14
Many undergraduates say their experience with research was one of the best parts of their college career. This session will cover what undergraduate research entails and the benefits of getting involved.
"Identifying Research Opportunities"
3 p.m. Sept. 15
Research opportunities are available in every department, but it can still be difficult to get started. In this session, students will learn how to identify a research topic and potential research mentors, as well as how to determine the right kind of research experience.
"How to Join the Scholarly Conversation"
3 p.m. Sept. 16
This workshop will help students feel confident in reviewing and reading scholarly articles, and provide a series of questions to ask as they enter the scholarly conversation. This workshop is meant for students who have just begun an undergraduate research experience or those who are interested in starting an experience and want to make sure they have the skills and tools to succeed.
Fellowships 101
3 p.m. Sept. 17
Fellowships are funded opportunities for intellectual growth and professional development through experiences such as paid research opportunities, overseas language learning and travel to non-traditional locations. In this session, undergraduate students can learn more about fellowships and if they qualify for any of the major fellowships. It will also provide an overview of the numerous fellowships that URFM supports and how the office can help during the application processes.
