Four Penn Staters nominated for Rhodes, Marshall and Mitchell scholarships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Rising seniors Shay Toner, Josie Krieger, Leah Mullen and Laura Guay have been nominated by Penn State for the competitive and prestigious Rhodes, Marshall and Mitchell postgraduate scholarships.

Toner, of Mansfield, Pennsylvania, will apply to the Rhodes and Marshall scholarships. Toner is double majoring in microbiology and toxicology.

Krieger, of State College, Pennsylvania, will apply to the Rhodes, Marshall and Mitchell scholarships. Krieger is a double major in history and economics, and earning minors in Jewish studies and Middle East studies.

Mullen, of Oswego, New York, will apply to the Marshall and Mitchell scholarships. Mullen is majoring in music composition and earning a German minor and diversity studies certificate.

Guay, of State College, Pennsylvania, will apply to the Rhodes and Marshall scholarships. Guay is double majoring in biobehavioral health and French and Francophone studies and earning a minor in global health.

The Rhodes Scholarship allows for graduate students to study at the University of Oxford and is one of the oldest and most sought-after international postgraduate awards. The Marshall Scholarship was founded by in 1953 by the Parliament of the United Kingdom and provides an American graduate student with one to three years of study in almost any field of study at any institution in the U.K. The Mitchell Scholarship — named for former U.S. Senator George Mitchell — offers one year of graduate study in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The Penn State nomination process for students at the University Park campus takes place in the spring. Students can choose to participate in their penultimate or final year of their undergraduate studies.
