UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Institutes of Energy and the Environment (IEE) and the Hamer Center for Community Design will be hosting a workshop on flooding and community resilience. The event, titled “Achieving community resilience in the face of flooding,” will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 24, in 101 Stuckeman Family Building. It is free and open to the public.

Special guests Marvin Rudnitsky, Selingsrove Borough Council president; Skip Weider, Susquehanna Heartland Coalition; and Malcom Derk, Susquehanna University, will briefly present challenges facing the Borough of Selinsgrove and other riverine communities.

The open dialogue and workshop will be facilitated by Lara Fowler, IEE’s assistant director for outreach and engagement and senior lecturer at Penn State Law and Lisa Iulo, associate professor of architecture and director of the Hamer Center for Community Design in the College of Arts and Architecture.

“In years like this, it is especially important to be working together to think about building community resilience,” said Fowler, noting flooding is already the source of Pennsylvania’s most significant natural disasters.
