UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Borland Project Space’s “arts research revealed” will have a sustainability theme for 2019-20. Following the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations, Borland Project Space has accepted project proposals that seek to achieve a better and more sustainable world for all. Starting in September 2019, visitors can expect projects pertaining to climate, social justice, and historic and cultural preservation, to name a few.
“The beauty of the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals is their expansiveness and inclusivity,” said Ann Tarantino, Borland Project Space curator and assistant professor of art. “The SDGs provide a framework through which projects from all disciplines can find connection points to sustainable practices. BPS is thrilled to focus its program this year on projects that explore these themes.”
Following the Penn State Sustainability Institute’s motto of striving for human health and happiness, environmental quality and economic well-being for all, Borland Project Space will seek to create a unique experience for visitors. Offering a place where research, design, the arts and sustainability coexist prompts a larger conversation of how we can leave the world in better shape than when we found it.
“Projects will range from a series of roundtable conversations exploring the range of approaches to sustainability across the college to a graduate-student-led ‘Clay Café’ offering a space for reflection and conversation,” said Tarantino. “By showcasing a diverse range of projects that engage with different approaches to sustainability, we hope to create an environment in which students, faculty and staff are invited to connect their own work to sustainable practices.”
Borland Project Space, sponsored by the College of Arts and Architecture, is in 125 Borland Building on Penn State’s University Park campus. Borland Project Space is a place where Penn State affiliates can activate their research in a gallery setting, bringing transparency to the research process in all its forms and stages.
