UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State community is invited to attend an upcoming conversation hosted by Penn State Senior Vice President for Research Andrew Read and other leaders on Oct. 14 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The conversation will provide an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to engage in dialogue with Read and learn more about initiatives underway to strengthen the University’s research enterprise and get closer to the goal of ranking in the top 15 nationally for research expenditures.

The conversation will build upon Read’s comments during the recent virtual update, "From Great to Greater: Achieving Purpose, Agility and Opportunity at Penn State," which was hosted by President Neeli Bendapudi on Sept. 12. Moderated by Michael Wade Smith, senior vice president and chief of staff, there will be an opportunity to ask questions live during the session, in addition to submitting questions anonymously in advance using this form. While the conversation will be geared toward those directly involved in the research community, all are welcome to tune in virtually.

“Penn State is a research leader in several areas of global importance, including food and cyber security, semiconductors and energy,” Read said. “To drive even greater impacts and advance the University’s competitive edge, we are investing in a robust support system that will help our researchers to secure large external grants, forge industry partnerships and commercialize technologies, among other activities.”

During the conversation, Read will provide an update on the initiatives that are underway to better support researchers to achieve these goals. For example, he will discuss the progress of the Research Support Transformation Project, which aims to reduce unnecessary administrative burdens and increase the efficiency of operations so faculty and staff members can devote their full attention to pursuing groundbreaking discoveries, innovations and scholarship that address pressing societal issues. In addition, Read will announce the research expenditures for fiscal year 2023-24.
