UNIVERISTY PARK, Pa. — High school students interested in learning how modern buildings go from a dream to reality are invited to the new Building Our Future Summer Camp this summer.
During the 5-day overnight camp, aspiring architectural engineers will explore the artistic and technical aspects of designing high performance buildings with experiences developed and taught by instructors from the Penn State Department of Architectural Engineering (AE).
To be held July 14-18 at Penn State University Park, this new opportunity is open to high school students ages 15 and older. Registration is available here.
Campers will tour historical architecture, learn how to apply light to reshape spaces and get hands-on experience in the next generation of sustainable building technologies, all while learning from experts in structural engineering, construction management, mechanical engineering and lighting design.
Camp Director J Mundinger is a research technologist and practitioner instructor in the AE department.
“During camp we will break through the drywall veil, revealing the complex engineering behind modern high-performance buildings that few ever notice,” Mundinger said.
Throughout the week campers will explore life on the University Park campus in a positive environment with the support of Penn State Conferences and Institutes, which is a Penn State Outreach program.
“We help students get a true taste of college life with arrangements to stay in dorm rooms, eat meals in the dining commons and participate in various activities that occur during the program,” said Peggy Plunket, lead program manager for Conferences and Institutes. “Additionally, our staff training focuses on how to make sure all campers feel a sense of belonging at camp, which is a central to a positive experience.”
