UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence will hold webinars in March and April that are a part of the Institute’s ongoing diversity, equity and inclusion initiative. Penn State faculty, teaching assistants, instructional/learning designers and administrators at all campuses and colleges are invited to attend.

Disability Inclusion in the Classroom: Being an Ally for Students with Disabilities (Webinars)

This 90-minute webinar will address baseline knowledge about disabilities and the experience of students with disabilities in higher education including barriers and resource needs. Effective practices for working with students with disabilities in proactive ways will be explored. Registration will close one hour before the workshop starts.
This webinar is facilitated by Allison Fleming, associate professor of Rehabilitation and Human Services and Counselor Education; and Ashleigh Johnson, disability specialist intern.
DEI Journal Club
The DEI Journal Club will welcome Kathy Sun from 2-3 p.m. March 31. Sun is the author of “The mindset disconnect in mathematics teaching: A qualitative analysis of classroom instruction,” from The Journal of Mathematical Behavior.
Jay Dolmage, author of “Academic Ableism: Disability and Higher Education (2017),” will present on Friday, April 14, from 2-3 p.m. This session will focus on chapter four of “Academic Ableism.”
Interested in learning more about research on diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility? The online DEI Journal club will host sessions on Zoom every other week throughout the summer, and each session will focus on a separate article.

IT Accessibility has created a repository of accessible Word syllabus templates to quickly build an accessible syllabus. In this demonstration, participants will learn about the templates and basic accessibility techniques that can be applied to other academic or professional documents.
