UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Sokolov-Miller Family Financial and Life Skills Center will offer webinars during Financial Literacy Month this April. Some webinars are open to the public, and no-cost financial literacy resources are always available at financialliteracy.psu.edu.
“We provide financial literacy education year-round, but we especially want to highlight its importance this April," said Julie Heaton, director of the Sokolov-Miller Family Financial and Life Skills Center. "One of the things that our students — and our community — can do to help them lead healthy, balanced lives is ground themselves in the essentials of financial literacy. No matter a person’s major, profession or life circumstance, everyone can build a stronger foundation to safely build wealth over the course of their lives.”
Tuesday, April 4, webinar on homebuyer education
Homeownership is an exciting prospect, but buying a house is one of the biggest purchases most people will make in a lifetime, so it’s easy to also feel apprehensive.
The webinar, slated for noon to 1 p.m. April 4, will cover the five important steps to homebuying, including key homebuying terms, the importance of budgeting before buying, mortgages and other costs, and navigating the search process and making an offer. This webinar is open to the Penn State community and the public.
Students can plan to schedule an appointment with a financial professional after the webinar to get all their homebuying questions answered. Appointments are free and confidential.
A list of webinars open to the public, including the series’ Zoom link, can be found at the program's website.
Self-study modules are available here from “MoneyCounts: A Penn State Financial Literacy Series.”
Wednesday, April 5, webinar on preparing for a financial emergency
Presented by PNC Student Banking, the webinar from 4 to 4:45 p.m. on April 5 will cover how to incorporate an emergency fund into financial planning. Unexpected events such as a home or car repair, job loss, illness, divorce or a natural disaster can result in financial emergencies.
In this workshop, attendees can find out how to increase financial peace of mind by learning how to incorporate an emergency fund into a regular budget and how much to put into that fund. The webinar also will include strategies for adjusting a budget to weather the unexpected if an emergency does occur.
