UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence at Penn State will offer a short course, reading programs, and writing sessions and retreats for faculty during summer 2022. Some events have limited space and registration deadlines are coming up in April. The deadline for Teaching and Learning Scholarship Grants is in early June.

2022 Course Design Academy — Unbundled

Applications are due April 4 for the 2022 Course Design Academy. This program gives faculty the chance to design a new course or redesign an existing one.

In this unbundled model there will be little or no formal sessions. Faculty will instead partner with an expert design coach to achieve milestones throughout the summer and have a fully redesigned course by August. Faculty and design coaches will work from the book “Learning that Matters.”

Inclusive Teaching Summer Reading Groups

Faculty interested in learning more about inclusive teaching practices in a relaxed, flexible format can join an Inclusive Summer Reading Group.

This year, groups will be reading “What Inclusive Instructors Do: Principles and Practices for Excellence in College Teaching,” by Tracie Addy et al (2021). Groups will discuss how to incorporate the book’s ideas and practices into their own teaching.

Synchronous and asynchronous groups are available.

Register for a reading group by April 18 using this Qualtrics form. Faculty also have the option to form their own group.

DEIA Summer Journal Club

Faculty interested in learning more about teaching and learning research related to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility can join the Schreyer Institute’s DEIA Summer Journal Club. This series of virtual discussions will feature peer-reviewed teaching and learning literature and participants will have the chance to exchange ideas, consider how they might apply these ideas, and connect with peers from across the Penn State community.

Sessions will be hosted every other week throughout the summer, from 2-3 p.m. on May 20, June 10, June 24, July 8, July 22 and Aug. 5. Participants can join as many discussions as they wish. All articles will be accessible through Penn State University Libraries.

Teaching and Learning Scholarship Grant applications due June 3

The Teaching and Learning Scholarship Grant program helps faculty publish research on teaching and learning practices. Awards are typically within the range of $1,000 to $1,500.

More information is available at the Teaching and Learning Scholarship Grant page at schreyerinstitute.psu.edu. Faculty can consult Laura Cruz, associate research professor with the Schreyer Institute, at lxc601@psu.edu about their possible scholarship project.

Writing about Teaching: Virtual Writing Group

Faculty can join a writing group during summer 2022. Groups meet periodically to dedicate time to writing and hold each other accountable for their teaching- and learning-related research projects. Guests can drop into a writing group from 1-3 p.m. every Friday through the end of the spring semester to see what they are like.
