UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Five Penn Staters were nominated for the competitive and prestigious Rhodes and Marshall scholarships. 

The Rhodes Scholarship provides graduate students the opportunity to study at the University of Oxford and is one of the oldest and most sought-after international postgraduate awards. The Marshall Scholarship was founded in 1953 by the Parliament of the United Kingdom and provides an American graduate student with one to three years of study in almost any field of study at any institution in the U.K.  

Those qualifying for the nominations are: 

• Nate Carey, biotechnology, Eberly College of Science.
• Anshuta Beeram, premedical/medical, Eberly College of Science; and comparative literature, College of the Liberal Arts. 
• Kueyoung Kim, chemistry, Eberly College of Science; minor in mathematics.
• Olivia DiPrinzio, energy engineering and earth science and policy, College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. 

The nominees include a class of 2022 alumna from the College of the Liberal Arts who opted not to be named. 

Applying for the Marshall and Rhodes scholarships 

Students must be recommended by their university to apply for the Marshall and Rhodes scholarships. At Penn State, Undergraduate Research and Fellowship Mentoring (URFM) works with students to determine which scholarships they are most competitive for and helps to refine applications and prepare for interviewing.  

Undergraduate Research and Fellowships Mentoring is part of the Penn State Office of Undergraduate Education.
