UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Materials Research Institute (MRI) is accepting applications for the MRI Undergraduate Fellowship program, which gives Penn State undergraduate students access to cutting-edge, advanced instrumentation normally reserved for graduate students.
Through this program, students will receive training in subjects as varied as instrumentation and research, data management, experimental design skills, science communications, sustainability, and essential soft skills valued by employers. Students will work under the supervision of research staff in the Materials Characterization Lab (MCL), part of MRI’s top-ranked materials science research program. MCL project work carried out by fellowship students may include electron microscopy, molecular spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, optical microscopy, electron/ion spectroscopy, surface analysis, and more. This is a unique opportunity for students to add a powerful experience point to their resume.
The ideal candidate will be working toward a bachelor’s degree in physical sciences or an engineering program. Priority will be given to applicants currently in their first or sophomore year. More information and a detailed, updated application guide can be found on the MRI Undergraduate Fellowship webpage. The application deadline is Feb. 24, and the position starts May 8, 2023, and ends May 24, 2024, with an option for renewal of the one-year contract.
