Tiananmen Square protester to discuss fight for human rights in the digital age

Fengsuo Zhou, who now leads the organization Human Rights in China, to speak at University Park on April 3

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Fengsuo Zhou has dedicated his life to advocating for democracy and human rights in China. He will visit Penn State's University Park campus on Thursday, April 3, to discuss the evolution of political dissidence in China and efforts to combat it in the era of artificial intelligence.

Zhou's lecture will be held at 4 p.m. April 3 in 22 Deike Building. The event is sponsored by the Chinese Student Association and the McCourtney Institute for Democracy in the College of the Liberal Arts.

Zhou currently serves as executive director of the organization Human Rights in China and was one of the student leaders of the Tiananmen Square protest in 1989. He is widely recognized and respected in activist communities for his grounded leadership, humanitarian work and inclusive vision for social change.

He continues to mobilize human rights advocates in China, most recently focused on how to push back against AI and other digital surveillance tools used by the Chinese Communist Party. His lecture will focus on the White Paper Movement in 2022, which showed how free cyberspace outside China can spark real-world resistance within the country.
