UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State School of Public Policy in the College of the Liberal Arts is launching two new programs focused on preparing undergraduate students to become the next generation of civic leaders.
The Next Gen Leadership Academy is an innovative program that inspires undergraduate students from all majors to explore public service careers and equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge to make a lasting impact in their communities and beyond. The academy is one of more than 15 chapters nationwide that comprise the Volcker Alliance’s Next Generation Services Corps, a groundbreaking initiative that draws diverse, talented young people into public service.
Complementing the Next Gen Leadership Academy is the Public Policy and Leadership Across Sectors (PPLAS) undergraduate minor program, which introduces students to the policymaking process, policy analysis and public service values. Recognizing that complex social problems involve leaders across the public, private and nonprofit sectors, the PPLAS minor also equips students with the leadership skills needed to address complex societal challenges by utilizing a multi-sector approach to public policy.
“The launch of the Next Gen Leadership Academy and the Public Policy and Leadership Across Sectors minor underscores our commitment to preparing students for impactful leadership and public service”, said Lilliard Richardson, director of the School of Public Policy. “Through these initiatives, we aim to nurture a diverse cohort of future leaders with the knowledge, skills and passion to effect positive social change. By providing them with the tools and opportunities to navigate complex challenges, we are empowering them to make a lasting impact in their chosen fields."
The Next Gen Leadership Academy and the PPLAS minor are open to all Penn State undergraduate students, regardless of their major. These programs are ideal for individuals who are passionate about effecting positive social change and aspire to become leaders in government, the private sector, and non-profit organizations.
Applications for the Next Gen Leadership Academy and enrollment in the PPLAS minor are now being accepted. Interested students can obtain additional information and/or apply for either program on the School of Public Policy’s website. The application deadline for this year's Next Gen Leadership Academy is Friday, Sept. 22.
