UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Like many students in their senior year of high school, Renata Carlos Daou spent time researching and applying to colleges in 2018. But that wasn’t the only thing on her plate — she also was in the process of publishing her book of short stories.
Carlos Daou is now a junior at Penn State double-majoring in international politics and broadcast journalism. From Manaus, Amazonas in Brazil, Carlos Daou wrote some of the short stories featured in her book when she was just 13 years old.
“I liked to write, and I’ve been writing since I was a kid,” Carlos Daou said. “The process itself was nontraditional. Since it was a collection of stories, I never really sat down and wrote the book. It was just things that I have written over the years.”
Carlos Daou explained that while the book — “Friendship, Memories and Make-Believe” — was published in July 2019, it took about one full year to publish it.
“It was a lot of back and forth with my editor. And then, there was a whole formatting process,” she said.
The short stories in Carlos Daou’s book are a mix of fiction and nonfiction, with many based on real events from her life.
“I took some things that happened to me and thought, ‘I think I can develop something from this main idea,’” she said. “I put some fiction details in there and turned it into a fictional story based on something that really happened. Others are completely fiction and based on ideas that I created and invented.”
“So, if you read it, try and guess what’s fiction or not! I never specified which are fiction, which are nonfiction, and which are a little bit of both.”
When asked about her favorite short story from the book, Carlos Daou talked about one based on a weekend trip with friends to Alaska to see the northern lights.
“The whole trip was an adventure in and of itself,” she said. “When we got there, there were no hotels, so we slept in the car, which was super cold. It was a big mess, and I thought to myself, ‘How can I make this a little messier?’ It was a funny story that ended up being my favorite one in the book.”
