UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Registration for the fall 2023 Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) Symposium is now underway. The event, set for Oct. 18-19 in Alumni Hall at the HUB-Robeson Center on the University Park campus, will focus on how research leads to specific, meaningful outcomes and impacts. More information and a link to conference registration information is available on the symposium website.
The symposium will bring together a community of researchers, students, scholars, industry representatives and government representatives to discuss research storytelling, from discovery in the lab to impact on society.
Keynote and panel discussions
The fall symposium will feature three keynote speakers: Bob Coecke, chief scientist at Quantinuum; Samantha Kleinberg, associate professor in computer science at the Stevens Institute of Technology; and Vipin Kumar, Regents Professor and William Norris Endowed Chair in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota.
Throughout the event, speakers and panel discussions will cover an array of issues, including:
- From quantum picturalism to interpretable quantum artificial intelligence (AI)
- The past, present and future of quantum computing
- Penn State’s AI Hub
- Navigating the promises and pitfalls of generative AI
- Immersive technologies as a catalyst for advancing research and industry
- Discovery to impact: Storytelling
ICDS symposium participants will have the opportunity to:
- Attend keynotes by Bob Coecke from Quantinuum, Samantha Kleinberg from Stevens Institute of Technology and Vipin Kuma from University of Minnesota
- Learn more about quantum computing, generative AI and immersive technologies in multiple panels distributed over two days
- Hear remarks by Provost Justin Schwartz, Senior Vice President for Research Andrew Read and ICDS Director Jenni Evans
- Connect with an interdisciplinary community of scholars interested in utilizing data as part of scientific storytelling
- Network and find potential collaborators from across the University
- Learn about scientific storytelling with data from the perspective of Penn State’s industry partners
- Learn about the future direction of ICDS’s data science and computational science
- Discover new research being conducted at Penn State at the symposiums’ student poster session
The symposium will also host a judged, industry-sponsored poster session for undergraduate and graduate student research in data science and computational science. Student poster submissions are due by Oct. 5.
