Penn State IT implements Strategic Portfolio Management

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State IT has implemented Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM) to prioritize and allocate project resources and provide strategic tracking and up-to-date reporting capabilities.

The SPM offering provides a standard and consistent project intake process and leverages the University’s ServiceNow platform to manage processes and data from initial request through project execution. Those using the tool can access their portfolios and projects' status in one location, enabling efficiency, transparency and alignment of work to the University's strategic goals.

SPM was selected to help advance the IT support and shared service model being developed as part of the IT OST. Penn State IT's Enterprise Projects and Initiatives (EP&I) team oversaw the design and implementation over the past year in collaboration with IT leaders from across the University.

“SPM is foundational to Penn State IT’s pursuit of alignment and unified business processes,” said Ben Battaglia, interim senior director in Penn State IT's Office of the Chief Information Officer. “It provides clarity and transparency of our work, streamlines processes and empowers us to support students, faculty and staff while furthering the University’s strategic future.”

The new SPM service offering has replaced the now-decommissioned IT Leaders Portal, which was previously used to manually enter project details.

Those involved with IT project planning and management are encouraged to visit the Strategic Portfolio Management service SharePoint site for more information.
