UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The 2019 United States Veterans Scholarship Ride will take place Saturday, April 27, starting and ending at the State College American Legion. The Pennsylvania Chapter of the U.S. Veterans Motorcycle Club (USVMC) is organizing the ride in support of the Penn State World Campus Veterans Education and Advancement Fund (VEAF).

The ride will begin at 11:15 a.m. at the State College American Legion on Pine Hall Road, State College. Organizers are asking for a donation of $15 per person to the VEAF. A barbeque and entertainment will be provided at the State College American Legion at the conclusion of the ride.

The VEAF was created by Al Matyasovsky, retired program manager for the Penn State Office of the Physical Plant — who is best known for the Trash to Treasure program — and his wife, Sharon, to benefit active members of the United States military, veterans and immediate family members who are enrolled in classes through Penn State World Campus. Matyasovsky said he and his wife wanted to support veterans and their immediate families in honor of their parents.

“The scholarship was created in honor of my father, a World War II veteran and my mother, who he said was the family leader,” Matyasovsky said. “My wife also wanted to honor her father, who was a Korean War veteran, and her mother, for the same reasons. We were both greatly influenced by our parents and we hope they are looking down from heaven and are pleased.”

Renata Engel, vice provost for Online Education at Penn State, said scholarship funds are often a deciding factor in someone’s decision to pursue higher education.

“The scholarship supports veterans as they pursue their educational aspirations,” Engel said. “And it is one more way that the community organizers have demonstrated their long-standing commitment to those who serve our nation.”
