Bone health the focus of new Penn State Extension program

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Extension is launching a free webinar series, “Build Your Bones,” focused on preventing osteoporosis and maintaining bone health. The seven live webinar classes will occur from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursdays, from Sept. 26 to Nov. 7.

The course is designed for individuals interested in osteoporosis prevention, those diagnosed with the condition, and their families and caregivers. Osteoporosis can lead to serious health issues such as fractures, immobility and isolation.

The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences developed the course. Trained Penn State Extension educators will lead interactive presentations addressing:

  • The basics of osteoporosis.

  • Tests available to diagnose osteoporosis.

  • Medications frequently prescribed for those diagnosed with osteoporosis.

  • Healthy eating tips to maximize bone health.

  • Fall prevention exercises and physical activity recommendations.

  • How to move safely with osteoporosis.

  • How to retain independence.

Participants will have access to educational materials online and can join the associated research study if desired. Participation in the research study is not required to join the weekly program.

The registration deadline is 11:59 p.m. Sept. 25. The program is currently free as a pilot. Registration is required to receive the webinar links. Registrants also will receive access to the webinar recordings.
