Three Penn State Health hospitals named among nation’s best by U.S. News

Overall, Hershey Medical Center ranks as No. 1 in the Harrisburg metro region and No. 4 in Pennsylvania

HERSHEY, Pa. — U.S. News & World Report has named three Penn State Health hospitals among the best in the nation. The magazine recognized Penn State Health’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Holy Spirit Medical Center and St. Joseph Medical Center in its 2024-25 "Best Hospitals" rankings and ratings.

Overall, U.S. News ranked Hershey Medical Center as No. 1 in the Harrisburg metro region and No. 4 in Pennsylvania.

U.S. News ranks hospitals for excellent care in 15 adult specialties and evaluates their performance in certain surgical procedures and medical conditions.

“These ratings and rankings reflect our dedication to providing high-quality, compassionate patient care and the hard work of our staff who make it possible every day,” said Deborah Addo, president and chief operating officer at Penn State Health.

U.S. News ranked the Penn State Neuroscience Institute at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center as among the best in the nation for neurological and neurosurgical care, placing it in the top 50 out of 4,855 hospitals, at No. 49.

The Medical Center also ranked in the top 50 in two additional specialties — gastroenterology and GI surgery (No. 47); and ear, nose and throat (No. 41), out of 4,855 hospitals in the nation.

Milton S. Hershey Medical Center also is recognized as "high performing" in six additional specialties: cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, geriatrics, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery, and urology.

In addition, Holy Spirit Medical Center is rated as a "high performing" hospital for treating heart attacks and strokes. St. Joseph Medical Center earned "high performing" ratings for treating heart attacks, heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

According to U.S. News, the annual "Best Hospitals" rankings and ratings are designed to help patients and doctors make informed decisions about where to receive care. U.S. News evaluates hospitals based on objective measures such as clinical outcomes, preventable complications and level of nursing care. State and metro area rankings reflect the highest-performing hospitals in the area across multiple areas of care.

U.S. News also recognized Milton S. Hershey Medical Center as a "high performing" hospital for maternity care in the magazine’s 2023-24 "Best Hospitals for Maternity Care" ratings.
