Penn State institute announces pilot funding recipients

The Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) has announced the recipients of the Bridges to Translation II Pilot Project Funding.

The translation of biomedical discoveries to clinical application is a long and complex process with high costs and significant risk. The Bridges to Translation II Pilot Project Funding is designed to support research that breaks down roadblocks across the translational spectrum through:

  • the development of novel technologies;
  • multidisciplinary collaborations;
  • strategies for dissemination and implementation;
  • training programs for the next generation of clinical research scientists and staff; and
  • statistical methods and models to analyze data and projects that focus on addressing health needs among complex populations across the life span.

The 2016 Bridges to Translation II recipients are:

  • Amy C. Arnold, assistant professor of neural and behavioral sciences, College of Medicine for “Protective Effects of Angiotensin (1-7) in Peripheral Arterial Disease”
  • David Conroy, professor of kinesiology, College of Health and Human Development for “Classifying Drinking Behavior from On-Body Sensors to Trigger Fluid Consumption Interventions in Patients with Urolithiasis”
  • Idan Shalev, assistant professor of biobehavioral health, College of Health and Human Development for “Early-Life Adversity and Gene Expression Response to Acute Psychological Stress”
  • Jane R. Schubart, associate professor of surgery, Division of Outcomes, Research and Quality, and Dr. Rebecca Bascom, professor of medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, College of Medicine for “Establishing Translational Research in Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes, Rare Heritable Diseases of Connective Tissue”
  • Gregory S. Yochum, assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, College of Medicine for “Viral Involvement in the Pathogenesis of Diverticulitis”

The CTSI will launch the Bridges to Translations III RFA on Feb. 16 with a workshop at University Park. Registration and more information is available at http://bit.ly/2jYcElp.
