MCKEESPORT, Pa. — “Blood donations save lives, and I am living proof!” said Stephen Sherwin, director of information technology at Penn State Greater Allegheny, when he learned that the Health Sciences Club would partner with the American Red Cross to host a Blood Drive on March 18. The Health Sciences Club planned this event to pay it forward in recognition of donors whose selfless acts helped Sherwin recover from a recent illness.
In response to the call for blood donations, students, employees and community members came together to support the cause, ready to contribute to the lifesaving endeavor. Volunteers from the Health Sciences Club and the American Red Cross created a warm and encouraging atmosphere and welcomed donors with open arms. Volunteers and donors said they were grateful to give back and make a difference for those in need.
Reflecting on the significance of the event, Sherwin said, “I am truly honored and humbled by the event. Had it not been for donated blood, I would not be here today. I am extremely proud of our campus community for hosting this event.”
Kristal Tucker, associate teaching professor of biology and program coordinator of the biobehavioral health bachelor of science program at Greater Allegheny, discussed the importance of hosting the Blood Drive.
"Blood donations are a lifeline for individuals in need of transfusions due to medical emergencies, surgical procedures, chronic illnesses and unexpected health complications," Tucker remarked. "Each donation has the potential to save multiple lives and make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and their families. The Health Sciences Club is proud to host such an impactful event at Penn State Greater Allegheny."
This year’s drive successfully collected 24 units from 26 donors, highlighting the community's commitment to this vital cause.
The Penn State Greater Allegheny Health Sciences Club, established in 2016 by Tucker, offers students opportunities for professional and personal growth. Through mentorship, leadership roles, and networking, the club prepares members to enter careers in clinical research, public health, or graduate programs in fields such as nursing and medicine. Motivated students seeking to make a positive impact and desiring to prepare for careers in health are encouraged to join the club. For more information, contact Tucker at krt18@psu.edu.
