MCKEESPORT, Pa. —  Kuei-Nuan Lin, associate professor of mathematics at Penn State Greater Allegheny, has been honored with the 2025 Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) Service Award. This award recognizes her exceptional leadership in advancing women in the field of mathematics.

“Receiving this award is profoundly meaningful to me,” said Lin. “It represents a significant honor and recognition of my dedication to serving the Association for Women in Mathematics and my passion for advancing women in math.”

Lin's contributions include leading the AWM Mentor Network Program, serving on the Education and Outreach Portfolio Committee, and participating in the AWM-NSF Travel Grants Selection Committee. Her role as an associate editor for the 2022 AWM Symposium Proceedings Volume and her presidency of the American Association of University Women Pittsburgh Branch further highlight her dedication to supporting women.

“Growing up, I was often told that, as a girl, my primary value was in being pretty and that it was acceptable to be poor at math,” Lin said. “I am determined to challenge this mindset and show future generations that women can excel in mathematics and are indeed capable of mastering it.”

The AWM Mentor Network Program, which matches volunteer mentors with girls and women interested in mathematics, has seen significant improvements under Lin's leadership, emphasizing the program's enhanced efficiency and effectiveness.

When asked if she could provide any advice to women pursuing a career in mathematics, Lin said, “Do not let anyone discourage you from pursuing mathematics simply because you are a woman. Such beliefs are a product of societal constraints, but you can achieve anything you set your mind to and excel in it, as long as you are dedicated and determined.”
