UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The 2023 QS World University Rankings, released on June 8, confirm Penn State as a top 100 global institution. The University rose in the rankings to 93rd in the world, and came in ninth among all public U.S. universities, even as the number of institutions ranked increased 9% in size over the past year to include more than 1,400 of the world’s leading universities.
The QS Rankings are considered to be one of the most reputable international university-ranking systems, and is used as a popular source of comparative global data about university performance, according to Roger Brindley, vice provost for Penn State Global.
QS's methodology for the world university rankings measures academic and employer reputation; faculty-student ratio; international faculty and students; and research citations per faculty.
Brindley noted that these rankings continue to become increasingly competitive, reflecting progressively more universities of excellence emerging from growing higher education systems, notably in East Asia and the Middle East.
“While global rankings will never influence the focus and extraordinary impact of Penn State faculty scholarship,” said Brindley, “it is noteworthy that our outstanding research and teaching are consistently recognized as world class. This remains important as prospective undergraduate and graduate students and their families, the world over, use rankings as an introduction to the complexities of U.S. higher education, and to differentiate between the 4,000 degree-granting postsecondary institutions in this country.”
