March 4 workshop to focus on ethics education, assessment in graduate programs

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A panel of faculty and administrators will hold a virtual workshop exploring innovative approaches to ethics education and assessment in graduate programs from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4. This free, 90-minute session, titled "Enhancing Ethics Education and Assessment in Graduate Programs," will provide practical strategies, real-world examples and collaborative insights to help strengthen ethical decision-making initiatives.

Designed for graduate program leaders, including program heads, directors of graduate studies, professors-in-charge, department heads, associate deans and faculty teaching ethics-focused courses, this session will equip participants with actionable insights and proven models to enhance ethics education and assessment.

The interactive discussion will be facilitated by Betty Harper, assistant vice provost for assessment in OPAIR. Katie Bode-Lang, director of education and outreach in the Office for Research Protections, will highlight challenges and opportunities within the Scholarship and Research Integrity (SARI) and Research Integrity and Scholarly Excellence (RISE) programs. Michael Verderame, senior associate dean of the Graduate School, will share strategies for improving ethics education based on a successful research project completed at the College of Medicine, while Ted Toadvine, Nancy Tuana Director of the Rock Ethics Institute and professor of philosophy, will provide classroom-based examples of practical ethics education.
