Kirby’s primary role in the Department of Learning and Performance Systems is as the program coordinator for the Learning, Design, and Technology online programs, where he coordinates the efforts of faculty and staff colleagues with the delivery support provided by Penn State World Campus. In addition to program administration duties, he is deeply involved with program and course development, and recruits, advises and teaches students.

Kirby’s professional interests include online program administration, educational systems design, the integration of technology into learning environments, the advisement of adolescents, and adolescent motivation to learn. He particularly focuses on constructivist approaches to learning, especially in nonformal (volitional and structured) and informal (volitional and unstructured) learning environments. Kirby serves as a member of multiple committees and task forces of the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America, including leading roles in planning large-scale youth events.

Kirby has a bachelor of arts in communication studies from SUNY Brockport and a master of science in educational psychology and a doctorate in instructional systems, both from Penn State. Prior to coming to Penn State, he worked in educational program design and administration in Malvern, Pennsylvania; Columbus, Ohio; and Casper, Wyoming.
