Students, staff and faculty members from Penn State's College of Education share recent research and career achievements.
- Seventeen presentations by 24 faculty members and graduate students from the Penn State College of Education presented at the Comparative & International Education Society (CIES) 2025 conference, which was held March 22-26 in Chicago. The theme of CIES 2025, “Envisioning Education in a Digital Society,” is inspired by rapid transformations taking place due to technological advancements. Faculty members who participated in the conference included David P. Baker, David Post, Gerald LeTendre, Soo-yong Byun, Katerina Bodovski and Jose Cossa. Graduate students who presented at the conference were Jaeung Kim, Junghyun Kim, Eun Jung Paik, Marcelius Braxton, Sangeun Samantha Lee, Md Rifat Hassan Liju, Suyoung Park, Dajung Sohn, Yeonwoo Lee, Maure Aguirre Ortega, Madiha Noor, Jubara Ali Abusin, Ozge Ergin, Moutushi Mahreen, Ari Kim, Kelli Harris, Sharmistha Barat and Yi Wu.
- Liza Conyers, professor of rehabilitation and human services (RHS), and Pia Smal, associate teaching professor of RHS, were recipients of two awards at the National Association for Rehabilitation, Research, Policy and Education Conference in February. Conyers received the Research Award, which is presented to a person (or team of researchers) whose recent contributions (within the last three years) to the rehabilitation and/or disability scholarship are worthy of recognition for their impact on the field. Smal received the Rehabilitation Educator Award for Teaching Faculty. which is presented to a rehabilitation educator (teaching/clinical faculty) who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to teaching, advising, mentoring, and development of rehabilitation students at any level (undergraduate or graduate).
- Erica Frankenberg, professor of education and demography, has been named as one of 29 2025 AERA Fellows. The Educational Researcher - AERA Fellows Program honors scholars for their exceptional contributions to, and excellence in, education research. Additionally, Frankenberg co-authored a piece for The Conversation, “Big cuts at the Education Department’s civil rights office will affect vulnerable students for years to come.”
- Brandy Henry, assistant professor of RHS, co-authored an article, "Community coalitions’ navigation of policies to address the opioid epidemic: insights from qualitative interviews in four states" in BMJ Public Health. In addition, she co-authored a publication, "Clinician and Practice Characteristics Associated With Support of Office-based Methadone: Findings From a National Survey,” in Journal of Addiction Medicine.
- Teachers College Press has released the website for a new book, “Transforming Teacher Preparation Across Nations,” co-edited by Gerald LeTendre, Harry L. Batschelet Chair of Educational Administration (educational leadership).
- Emily Sharp, assistant teaching professor of special education, co-authored a new book, "Structured Literacy: Teaching K–12 Students to Read Using the Science of Reading and Explicit Instruction."
