The Postdocs of EMS (PoEMS) are hosting an inaugural EMS Postdoctoral Research Showcase from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, in 112 Walker Building. Showcase will feature the innovative research being conducted by postdocs in Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. The event is free and open to the public.
“Penn State’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs held a Postdoc Research Exhibition for the whole University in December, and we thought it was a great idea for PoEMS host one for the college,” said Jake Carstens, chairperson of PoEMS. “The showcase is aimed at recognizing and celebrating the contributions of the college’s postdoctoral researchers.”
All undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff are invited to attend. Showcase will include both lighting talks and longer, 10-minute talks.
“This is an opportunity to introduce students, faculty and staff across the college to postdocs and their work in an interdisciplinary, relaxed setting,” said Carstens. “In addition to discussing our specific research projects, we also want show students who are considering going into research- and academia-based careers what types of research opportunities are available to postdocs.”
PoEMS was officially launched during the summer of 2022 and aims to enhance the postdoctoral experience at Penn State in EMS by providing resources to build community among the EMS postdocs, as well as to assist postdoctoral fellows, postdoctoral scholars and visiting postdoctoral scholars in their professional and personal development.
“Having a postdoc society at the college level fosters even more social interaction, as well as more well-defined conversations, with leadership at the department, college and university level and helps enhance the postdoc experience,” said Carstens.
