UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — While it still feels a little bit like summer outside, cold and flu season is here. Students are especially at risk for respiratory illnesses because of constant exposure through common living spaces, classrooms, shared restrooms and social activities.
During cold and flu season, students should be exceptionally mindful of their personal health and hygiene routines. Following the tips below may limit the spread of germs and prevent illness on campus.
- Cover your mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing; use your upper sleeve to cover your cough, not your hand.
- Wash hands frequently and efficiently. Students should wash hands with warm water and soap for 15-20 seconds (two rounds of the “Happy Birthday” song). When unable to wash with soap and water students should use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid sharing food and drinks, engaging in drinking games, or participating in other activities that may result in saliva exposure.
- Stay home when you are sick to limit the spread of illness to others.
Students can also protect themselves from the flu by getting a flu shot. An annual flu vaccine is the first and most important step in preventing flu viruses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
