Penn State, State College Borough to celebrate Global Dignity Day on Oct. 19

Public invited to watch livestream of ceremony

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State and State College Borough will celebrate Global Dignity Day for the first time with a ceremony from noon to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19.

All community members, including Penn State faculty, staff and students throughout the commonwealth and residents and visitors from State College and the Centre Region, are invited to watch the livestream and must register in advance through the Penn State Outreach website. 

Global Dignity Day is a celebration of unity in the belief that everyone deserves to live a life of dignity. The celebration was first observed in 2008 and is held on the third Wednesday of October in more than 80 countries.

University leaders, borough officials and Penn State faculty members who are scheduled to speak are:

  • Neeli Bendapudi — president, Penn State.
  • Ezra Nanes — mayor, State College Borough.
  • Michael Wade Smith — senior vice president and chief of staff, Penn State.
  • Beth Seymour — co-chair, Commission for Women; professor, Penn State Altoona.
  • Ashley Patterson — associate professor of education, Penn State College of Education.
  • Kevin Kassab — community engagement manager, State College Borough.

The speakers will discuss “Dignity at Penn State,” “Dignity’s Evolution,” “What is Dignity?” and “Dignity in the Community.” Nanes also will read a mayoral proclamation and lead the reciting of the Dignity Pledge.
