UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — This week, Penn State is celebrating more than one victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers.

On August 29 and 30, Penn State’s University Staff Advisory Council (USAC) and the staff council at West Virginia University each hosted a blood drive to give back to a great cause while participating in some lighthearted competition. The blood drives were part of a challenge supporting the American Red Cross.

During the drives, Penn State staff, faculty and students donated a total of 93 pints while West Virginia’s community donated 87 pints. The winner was announced during the Nittany Lions vs. Mountaineers football game at West Virginia on Aug. 31.

“We want to thank the Penn State community for participating in this friendly competition, as well as the West Virginia staff for leading a great effort,” said Rachel Galloway, Penn State assistant director for the Center for Spiritual & Ethical Development and immediate past chair of USAC. “The real winners are the people in our communities who will benefit from the dozens of donations.”

According to the American Red Cross, blood donations are used for patients in need of surgery, cancer treatment and transfusions for blood loss from traumatic injuries. One donation can help save more than one life.
