Penn State celebrates 162 years at Lion Ambassadors’ Founder’s Day

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State was founded on Feb. 22, 1855, and on Feb. 22, 2017, the Penn State Lion Ambassadors will host a 162nd birthday celebration for the University.

Penn State Founder’s Day will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the HUB-Robeson Center. Birthday cake, cookies and more will be handed out to students, as well as other free food and prizes. The event also will feature activities, including live entertainment, a photo booth and trivia games. Founder’s Day is a free event and open to the public.

“My favorite thing about Founder’s Day is that it brings the entire Penn State community together,” said Project Leader Catherine Tondi. “Penn State has greatly impacted the lives of students, faculty, alumni and others, and having a community-wide celebration in honor of the University’s history is such a unique and special experience.”

“Tradition is what brings this University to light,” said Lion Ambassadors President Bennett Samuel. “We instill tradition and pride each and every day, but Feb. 22nd is always a humble reminder to continue carrying on the traditions of those who came before us.”

The Penn State Lion Ambassadors are the student alumni corps of the Penn State Alumni Association, who aim to communicate the University’s history, personality and traditions to students, alumni and friends through tours and programming. Founded in 1982, the Lion Ambassadors serve as an important facet of student outreach for the Alumni Association.
